According to a recent study published in Medical News Today, bio-cellular grafts which are used by surgeons to repair damaged tissue may be useful for treating low back pain. However, not all sufferers responded equally to the therapy.

Results reported at the 29th Annual Meeting of the American Academy of Pain Medicine stated that at 5-24 months following treatment, patients reported changes in back pain ranging from complete pain relief to no improvement. No patient reported a worsening of pain, and no complications occurred. All subjects who experienced pain relief also reported significant improvement in activity tolerance or a reduction in pain medication use, or both.

The procedure involved injecting a concentrated form of bone-marrow cellular aspirate into lumbar discs in patients with clinical and objective evidence of disc degeneration. Donald J. Meyer, MD, PhD, the study's primary author said, "The results of our case review are encouraging," "Currently, when conservative treatment measures fail, therapeutic options are limited for individuals with back pain due to disc degeneration. Many resort to disc surgery or spinal fusion with mediocre results. Our goal is to help develop a safe, natural method to boost the body's own capacity to heal discogenic pain."

A future prospective study is warranted, the authors concluded, to examine whether biologic auto graft treatment may provide a safe and effective therapy for lumbar discogenic pain.

Magnesium is a mineral needed for health that helps turn the food we eat into energy and helps make sure the parathyroid glands, which produce hormones important for bone health, work normally.

You should be able to get all the magnesium you need from your daily diet. Some researchers and doctors believe that a low level magnesium deficiency may contribute to the symptoms of Fibro. A low level magnesium deficiency cannot be easily tested for in a blood test, so ruling this out can be difficult.

There is a very small amount of evidence for using magnesium to treat Fibro and overall the evidence is conflicting26, but it is a common supplement suggested by doctors specialising in Fibro.
It is worth noting that some forms of magnesium are more easily absorbed than others (magnesium malate or chelated magnesium are often suggested) and the less easily absorbed forms of magnesium may act as laxatives.

Taking high doses of magnesium for a short time can cause diarrhoea. If you take magnesium supplements, do not take too much because this could be harmful. However, having 400mg or less a day of magnesium from supplements is unlikely to cause any harm.

Monday 13th May is the start of Arthritis Care Week. With the theme of 'Something Can Always Be Done'.The aim of Arthritis Care Awareness Week is to help and educate people in a relaxed environment.

Arthritis in the UK is very common and affects some ten million people (one in six) of the UK population, many of whom are in constant pain.

But knowledge of arthritis is very low, misunderstanding and misinformation rife, and most people think that there's nothing that they can do about it and that it's inevitable. Says Arthritis Care acting CEO Phil Baker, " We want to set the record straight during Arthritis Care Week as we believe that something can always be done".

There are 200 types of arthritis and making even small changes to your lifestyle and managing symptoms will help. However, the first step is always the hardest so Arthritis Care say call their free and confidential helpline 0808 800 4050 or email them for help with your condition.

ME Awareness Week takes place from 6-12 May 2013. The week aims to improve awareness of ME and raise funds for research into this painful condition. Action for M.E. is the leading UK charity for people with Myalgic Encephalomyelitis (M.E.) and their carers.

M.E. is a chronic, fluctuating illness affecting 250,000 people in the UK. It may be diagnosed as Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS) or Post Viral Fatigue Syndrome (PVFS). M.E. symptoms may include persistent exhaustion, muscle and/or joint pain, sleep disturbance, feeling ’flu-like and having problems with memory and concentration.

Action for M.E. will provide information and support, while campaigning for better services and more effective treatments and driving and investing in research – until our vision is achieved and M.E. is overcome.

Find out more about us and what we believe about M.E.

Apart from a small grant in Scotland, we receive no government funding and are dependent on charitable donations for all of our work. Please help us to do more. Find out about ways you can help.

Between 13-17 May 2013 employees are encouraged to leave their cars at home and put national transport aside to get your blood pumping and get fit.

Walking is a great way to stay trim and helps keep your heart healthy.

It saves on petrol and bus fares, and is better for our planet.

It’s easy to fit some more walking in to your working week. Whether it’s making changes to how you travel to work, or getting out more at lunchtimes, Living Streets can help.

We're all sat at our desks long enough, so why not take the chance to stretch our legs, get fit and burn out the carbon footprint all in one go?

Many of the best writers including Charles Dickens and Wordsworth went on walks to get inspiration!

Always bend your knees when lifting 'anything' and keep your stomach pulled in and hold the item close to you.

Avoid excess weight as this puts a lot of pressure on your spine.

Watch your postures, especially if you sit down a lot. Take regular breaks to walk around and stretch out.

Stay as active as possible, walking and swimming are great for people suffering from back pain.

Try to keep your feet flat on the floor when you are working at a desk.

Only wear high heels for special occasions as they can put a strain on your spine.

Pop a cushion or towel behind your back for long car journeys and make sure you stop for regular breaks.

Last week I covered a story in the Mail Good Health section on a lady who died from an accidental overdose of Tramadol, prompting the necessity to take a close look at what you take with your tramadol to avoid any problems.

Now another article also in the Mail Good Health suggest that some medicines could give you a drink problem or even worse make your hair fall out, due to the disturbing side effects of some medicines.

The RxISK website is a valuable first step for people to see if any of their symptoms that they are experiencing are a side effect of their drug. It also acts as a forum for patients to discuss problems they've been having with drugs.

'Shoetherapy shoes' have loafers and ballet pumps and they are said to alleviate back and joint pain and muscular tension.

The key is the 2cm heel and raised sections in the inner sole that help to support your foot.

Apparently minimising calf strain and improving posture.

Pressure points in the heel massage the foot while walking, which they say boots circulation and can improve the appearance of cellulite and varicose veins.

However, don't hold your breath as an expert's view was that 'good diet and exercise will help with cellulite and varicose veins but shoe's alone are certainly not a cure'.

I do LOVE my pumps though so I am really tempted.

THE COMPANY
After two years of product development ShoeTherapy is finally born and it’s first model is a ballet pump shoe, as this classic shape is perfect for day time wear and also the fashion essential of the moment. The shoe is designed for all women suffering from back and joint aches due to bad posture and that are looking for relief of swollen ankles and poor blood circulation. It's also the first corrective shoe recommended for women during pregnancy and has a worldwide patent for its unique technology.

ShoeTherapy is the result of a collaboration between renowned French orthopedist doctor Jean Douhaire and fashion stylist Cécile Reinaud.

A pacemaker in the back of the neck has been developed to help reduce the swelling and stiffness associated with rheumatoid arthritis.

The pain and swelling of this condition is caused by the immune system mistakenly attacking the joints.

But the new inch-long device, which is the thickness of a pencil, is implanted next to the vagus nerve, which runs from the brain to the abdomen.

The job of one of the nerves is to reduce the release of inflammatory compounds for the spleen, and what the device does is send small electric shocks to the nerve.

Tests have shown that this helps reduce inflammation and 6 our of 8 patients had significant improvements in joint flexibility and pain.

If you have been on your feet all day, you are probably familiar with the discomfort of swollen legs and feet.

What actually happens is 'lymph', which is your body's mopping up mechanism flows into your lower legs after standing for long periods.

The best way to treat it is to lie on your back with your bottom touching the skirting board and legs vertical resting against the wall. You could also do this on your bed with your legs against your headboard if you find the floor too hard.

It's actually a yoga pose and can not only help relieve the discomfort of swollen legs, but can also help with stress, relieve digestive problems, headaches, insomnia, varicose veins, menstrual cramps, respiratory ailments, mild depression, anxiety and even arthritis.

Try to manage doing this pose for 10 minutes daily.

Researchers have found that brisk walking is just as good for the heart as running can be.

It can also lower the risk of high blood pressure cholesterol and diabetes.

They have estimated that a person would need to walk for three miles at a brisk pace to have the same amount of energy as running three miles, taking around an hour and 15 minutes instead of 38 minutes.

There analysis took six years and an article in the 'American Heart Association Journal', found that
the same energy used for moderate walking and vigorous running resulted in similar reductions in high blood pressure, cholesterol and diabetes.

You can find urban walks in your area tailored to the time or distance you want to walk www.walkit.com

Google ‘Healthy Heart Walks’, with the name of your local council or NHS trust and they will have a list of them all over the country.

If you go to www.walkjogrun.net and you can plan routes and it will tell you how many calories and how far you’ve gone.

You can also plan routes for walk, bike rides, runs etc head to www.runmyroute.com which allows you to plan your routes and gives distance and a free diary to log your exercise.

An antibiotic that has been used for acne could be used to help treat spinal cord injury's.

Doctors are giving the antibiotic 'minocycline' to over 400 patients who have suffered with spinal damage either through an accident or after surgery.

When the spinal cord is damaged the body releases a wave of molecules that then causes more destruction and loss of tissue.

Early research could suggest that the antibiotic could prevent these types of molecules from being released.

In an animal study it showed a better recovery rate for spinal injury's rather than a placebo.

In a recent trial researchers found that it reduced pain by up to two-thirds.

Back App chair use shown to ‘significantly’ reduce lower back pain
In difficult economic times, the last thing UK businesses need is staff off sick or underperforming

ACCORDING to NHS research, back pain is the most common reason for people to miss work and when at work, it can also affect concentration and productivity.

Most people will suffer from back pain at some point in their life. It is triggered by several factors, but one of the most common is sitting badly or awkwardly, or slouching in chairs.

Mike Dilke, owner of Back App UK Ltd, sole distributor of the Back App chair in the country, said:

“A study carried out by physiotherapists at Limerick University compared the use of the Back App with the widespread, ‘standard’ office chair with an adjustable back and arm rests.

“Twenty-one people did a one hour typing exercise with a laptop and mouse at a typical office desk and their experience was recorded. What scientists found was that using the Back App significantly reduced lower back pain but there was increased lower back pain on the standard chair.

Overall, the trend was for more general body discomfort on the standard chair and a lot less when using the Back App.”

The Back App is a ‘saddle’ seated chair without a back rest, which moves around to various degrees via a ball at the base. The movement varies from slight (‘green’ zone) to dynamic (‘red’ zone.)

Unlike the standard chair, which is stable and sets your hips at a 90 degree angle, the Back App seat sets the hips at a larger angle. This means there is less muscle effort to hold the body upright, as the spine’s position is similar to when you are standing. And this has the same, less stressful effect on the back muscles.

Scientists also recommend that movement helps with back pain and the saddle is constantly moving.

But Mike added that another advantage of using the Back App is that it can also increases alertness and productivity at work – something most of us could do with from time to time.

“Using the Back App is all about prevention as well as treatment. It can help reduce lower back pain in those already suffering from it, but it can also prevent its development over time, which is something many of us will have to deal with at some point in our lives,” he said.

About Mike Dilke, Relaxback UK and Back App:
Mike came across the Back App Chair online when looking at running a business helping people with bad backs, owing to his long-term interest in Yoga.

The chair was invented by Norwegian, Freddy Johnsen, who had suffered severe back problems during his life. It is currently manufactured in Sweden. After Mike enquired about the product, he was invited stay with Freddy and following this visit, they agreed to do business together. Mike is now the sole distributor in the UK.

The Back App is the combination of a chair with an adjustable balancing board. It sets your position, when sitting, in an open hip angle, not at 90 degrees as in a regular chair. This means it’s less effort for the body to hold itself in a good posture and the spine is also resting in its most natural position, so the pressure between the vertebrae is less.

The adjustable ball makes the chair wobble and prevents stiffness from sitting ‘too’ still, as well as giving you a low level core workout at the same time.

There was some shocking reading in this week's Daily Mail Good Health section.

The article tells of a lady who died from taking only TWO more tablets than her usual daily dose of Tramadol.

Apparently one of reasons this drug is used to 11.1 million people is because of the cost. It only costs the NHS £1.99 for 100 tablets.

Tramadol is regarded by many doctors as a weaker opioid, but in fact it has the same risks of overdose as with morphine.

It should also not used if your taking sleeping tablets, tranquillisers and anti-depressants or alcohol.

But, despite this fact many are mixing this drug with the others, with a risk of respiratory depression. .

More than 500 people died from tramadol overdoses between 2006 and 2011.

If you take tramadol as prescribed it is a highly effective drug but the problems seem to arise where the dosage is exceeded or it is taken with alcohol and/or other drugs that have a sedative effect.

The article goes on to say that patients prescribed opioid s need close monitoring and should be seen at least once a month by their doctor to see if they are getting any benefit from them.

I have to say that this article frightened me to death. I take the maximum dose like the lady in the article, but have another prescription for a 25mg dose for when I am in a lot of pain. I am also on anti-depressants and was given a week's supply of sleeping pills because I was having such a hard time with pain at night.

While away on holiday I took everything above and also had a couple of glasses of wine each evening as the instructions just say that you should not operate machinery or drive as it may make you drowsy. I was obviously not driving so I enjoyed a little tipple every night during the holiday.

When I arrived home my daughter was over for the weekend and I had terrible shakes and kept getting my words in a muddle. I basically felt as though I could not get the words out that I wanted to say. I was a bit worried about it but my daughter did say 'maybe it could be the drinks while I was away', which believe it or not made me feel better. It has since stopped so it was obviously that.

I really don't know what to think of these findings and would advice anyone like it said in the article to see their doctor if they decide they want to stop taking them. I know if I see my doctor she will refer me back to my pain consultant who deals with all my drugs but I don't see him until June.

I know one thing for sure though, I will definitely NOT be taking the extra 25mg even if I do need it. Mine are also slow release which I think can only be a better way of taking them.

This app is free, simple to use, and suitable for iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad. It provides information on all aspects of back care, to help people with back pain.

The app is called Back Care – for Back Pain and Bad Backs – and is available from the Apple App Store.

It has basic facts about caring for your back and how to avoid injuring it, with illustrated exercises shown on screen and videos showing the correct way to do them. The 22 videos show simple exercises, ranging from arm and leg extensions to neck and shoulder stretches. There are factsheets for cyclists, motorists, and office workers, giving advice on how to avoid back pain.

In addition, another useful section called “Me and My Back” allows people to keep a diary of their back pain, showing the areas affected and the level of pain. The data is saved and can be sent to the user’s email address or sent to a practitioner of their choice prior to an appointment.
The app is free but the charity hopes customers will make a donation to help BackCare, as the charity runs entirely on voluntary contributions, www.backcare.org.uk

Back in 2 Hours is a unique way of finding out what is causing your back pain. At Back in 2 Hours, during a two-hour visit you'll see a Consultant Spinal Surgeon for an assessment, have a MRI scan, discuss the results and leave with a treatment pathway as to how best to treat your condition.

A good enough reason to use this is for informed, expert advice from specialists who will help to provide you with a definitive diagnosis. It saves you time – no need to make multiple trips, and completed during one 2 hour visit.

You leave with a consultants report including your diagnosis and treatment pathway, a Consultant Neuro-Radiologist report on your MRI Scan, your MRI scan images on CD and a follow-up treatment to help you find the best service.

I had my fourth treatment today for my neck pain. So far it has worked for my pins and needles and some of my arm pain, which had a great knock effect with my sleep, as I'm not continuously waking up with pins and needles.

Today she asked how I have coped during my holiday. I explained that I felt better for my unbroken sleeps and my arms were not in any where near as much pain, but, on the other hand I had done 'nothing' for two weeks to aggravate it.

For the last couple of days I have paced my ironing as when the neck pain comes on I have to stop 'immediately'. I told her how this is the first time during all my problems that I have had to frequently move my chair to talk to my friend, or move my body to one side, to look out of the coach window as it was too painful otherwise.

She is still of the opinion that it is muscular which was triggered off by the fall last year, so she decided another treatment with the needles in the same place should be the order of the day.

'Some' were extremely painful, other's I didn't batter an eyelid but I would rather feel it otherwise I don't feel we have got the right spot. Usually the physiotherapist leaves me for around twenty minutes while the needles do their trick but today we carried on talking.

What she then found out from me was how I manage with my neck and lumber pain and how I don't manage it in some situations. She pointed out that we all have our 'fight or flight' kick in with pain but sometimes when people suffer from chronic pain the 'fight or flight' mechanism in our brains does not kick in to say 'it's nothing to worry about' but instead we automatically think it must be something bad.

I understand where she is coming from here but I do sometimes think that you are looked at on a 'how you are on that day' basis and not 'how you have been before'. It actually wasn't long before my neck really triggered off as I was turning my head to talk to her. She could then find the exact spot the pain was coming from and so she did some manipulation in that area. She told me to expect it to be uncomfortable for a while but it should settle down.

She did say is that the 'Back Pain Team' that I have an appointment with will go into all this in detail and it will be up to them after my assessment with them as to what to do next. I have a good feeling about this team for my pain problems as I do tend to 'think the worst' when it flares up which I guess is because I have had so many operations in the past.

The pain has flared up and I've spent most of the afternoon sleeping and resting with a heat pad on but as the saying goes, 'no pain, no gain'.

HOLISTIC THERAPIST MAGAZINE...

http://www.holistictherapistmagazine.com/

Holistic Therapist Magazine is the first and only UK publication that offers a balance of business and industry features, with content for the therapists themselves. It caters for the desires and requirements of practising and studying holistic professionals.

The idea of this magazine was born in 2010, and after thorough research and careful planning has finally launched in January 2012. The founder and Managing Director, Jayson Firmager has selected an enthusiastic team to help him materialise his dream of bringing therapists The Industry’s No.1 Business Guide.

The HTM team has strong relationships with an impressive list of therapists, and suppliers, and is proud to provide readers with answers to their questions. At the planning stage of each issue, groups of therapists are asked what it is they wish to know about, to learn about, and to read about. Facts are sourced from professionals at the top of their field, who are all keen to be involved in what has been described as ‘a much needed industry title’.

HTM encourages business, CPD and good health. It is a platform for therapists to share their thoughts and opinions and to communicate with others in the holistic industry. Join our Forum to share your opinion, industry knowledge, and to have your questions answered.

I wrote a post in March 2010 on lidocaine infusions being used for pain relief.

57 comments later and I am still getting people saying they have just had an infusion, and how good it was. Some seem to be available on the NHS and others seem to be given privately, which could me they are quite expensive.

Comments were from patients in London, Wales, Glasgow, Isle of Man, Canada and Australia.

Most found the lidocaine a great help for their pain, which is given as an infusion over a couple of hours in hospital.

It is written that it's used for neuropathic and chronic pain symptoms to help improve quality of life, as it does not have the same type of side effects as other opioid or analgesia.

When I wrote the last post on this it was not being used much in the UK at all, but it now seems to be available throughout the UK. But I can't help but think that the availability on the NHS could be a post code lottery availability. This seems a shame if the effect can be so significant for chronic pain sufferers.

SITTING PARTNER PORTABLE LUMBER SUPPORT...
http://www.backinaction.co.uk/sittingpartner

Sitting Partner is an effective relief for back pain, which avoids the pitfalls of most lumbar supports, making it more comfortable and more suitable for using while travelling.

It was designed by a Norwegian Doctor to help his patients, and has become a world-wide success, frequently recommended as part of treatment. Its design-protected shape not only supports the spine, taking the strain off painful ligaments, muscles and discs, but it constantly moves, thus promoting better circulation and lymph drainage.

The movement in Sitting Partner means that it complies with the latest thinking on movement and back pain. It is now recognized that static spinal joints become unhealthy spinal joints with time, and movement and activity is important to recover from back pain ... even if it seems painful to move.

The Sitting partner can be set to four different positions, so will fit everyone. A special, inflatable air pocket allows increased support if your back is acute, or if you will be sitting still such as in a plane or car.
